Good for you, and Fuck Einstein. It's painful for me to hear you, not yet 40, feeling concerned about aging. I'm over 70 and just completing the 3rd and, please god, final draft of my memoir. For women my age, late bloomers are called Depends.
ha ha! nice reference, Annie! And let me take this opportunity to honor 19th century Ameilia Bloomer, a newspaper owner and women's rights activist from whom the garment took its name after she helped popularize its use.
Thank you for reading, Annie! I’m chucking at your“Depends” line 😆
Yeah, Einstein was definitely off the mark on this one, ha! And about aging, the more I let go of the pressure of all the things I think I’m supposed to do by a certain age, the more I feel like I can actually enjoy the present 😌
Love hearing that you’re completing that third draft. It’s no small feat. Congratulations!
58 and just stumbled into a social media spotlight by doing what I've always loved: reading obituaries. Turns out it wasn't such a peculiar hobby after all. OK it's still peculiar but storytelling is all the rage now!
Thanks for this post! As someone whose debut novel is coming out at 70, I can only say that time and luck don't always cooperate, but by persevering in the creative process, we do what we need to do to have our work ready for when the time just might be right.
I felt the same way at 38, not to mention 18 and 28. And still do, as I sit here in gray hair country, a few degrees north of 40. One of the blessings of getting older is that the wisest of all mantras, "f*ck it" speaks more loudly in your mind when concerns and anxieties arise. I would argue with you claiming the mantle of "Late Bloomer" however. You may be a poseur in that world, given you have already created such gorgeous works of poetry and film.
not to mention being working class, poor, having to work for a living, being a single parent.. etc etc etc. My first book to be accepted by a publisher is coming out this year. It's about having time, the wherewithal to support yourself to find time to write, and, as Virginia Woolf said, having a room of one's own.
Love this post. It makes me think of one of my favourite movie lines that I love to quote, from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: "It’s never too late to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit; start whenever you want."

Yes! You hit that sweet spot where the things you love also resonate with your audience 🤩 Love this!

Hear, hear! Beautifully said. Congrats on your book coming out! And thank you for reading 🙏🏾
Hi! I’m a new follower and a late bloomer.
Presently working on developmental and copy edits to my manuscript.
Looking to reading more of your inspiring content.

Hi Constance, and welcome! Love that you’re bringing your dream to life. Cheers to that 🥂 And thank you for following!

As far as a favorite late bloomer, I found Sharon Jones inspiring https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharon_Jones
Her first album came out at 40. And she absolutely rocked it.
Needed this—and hope I finish my book before I’m 70 🫠
